Strategic Positioning for small businesses 101.
Being at the right place at the right time does wonders.
A young guy walks into a computer village in the crazy city of Lagos in search of who will repair his non-existent itel 17 Promax.
It's his first time so he just walks to the nearest stall in front of him and gets his phone repaired.
Who do you think benefited from this short scenario?
The Business Owner of course.
And that is because he was positioned at the entrance of the computer village.
If you are a typical Nigerian, then I am sure you have seen this happen time and time again so the story isn't very much of a surprise to you.
The story is just a small but powerful evidence of how effective strategic positioning is for any small business owner.
Most times the reason why you aren't getting sales isn't that your products are terrible but because you are at the wrong place.
Another gist?
Last year, I met a lady who was a big perfume merchant and I was shocked when she told me that she didn't have a social media handle or use any social media marketing strategies.
It was surprising but yet she rakes in figures just from selling perfumes.
I asked her for her secret and guessed what she told me?
She said, "I know where the big fishes are, and I pitch my fishing hooks where they are."
To break that heavy statement, she began to tell me how she grew her perfume brand.
She told me that when she started, she wanted her customers to be big, wealthy, and famous.
She told me that Big men do not have time to go shopping for perfumes on the street.
All they do is find the right plug, send money, and get their products.
And to get them, she started hanging around where she could find them.
First, she relocated to Abuja and stocked up on fancy, classy perfume products that her target customers would love.
Next, she began to visit mosques, attended parties, and built relationships with the high and mighty.
She talked to them, met their families, and patronized their businesses.
Word of mouth was her marketing strategy and within a short period, she built a strong and stable network of trusted clients who pay heavily for her perfumes.
Can you spot the lessons here?
Let me point them out.
1. She knew her target customers and defined them clearly. (the big, wealthy, and famous).
2. Next, she got products that she knew they would love. Trust me, the best marketing strategy is a product your customers want).
3. Then, she created valuable relationships with them. The hangouts and parties were just a means to an end.
Her secret was a genuine interest in her target customers and a desire to help them out with their perfume problems.
Three short steps but powerful tricks.
